Use case · DM follow-ups

Most people don't say no.
They forget. Follow up automatically.

Someone comments on your Reel, gets your DM, means to click your link — and then a notification steals them away. Reachlee sends one polite, perfectly-timed reminder to everyone who never replied and never clicked. It cancels itself the moment they respond. Zero manual work, zero awkward double-texting.

Updated August 2026 · Human-verified
Built on Meta's official API · Meta-verified Tech Provider · One reminder, never a drip
1Add a follow-up step to any Reachlee automation — comment-to-DM, Reels, story replies, DM keywords, or product carousels. If the person never replies and never taps your link, one polite reminder goes out automatically.
2You pick the delay on a slider, from 30 minutes up to 20 hours. The reminder cancels itself the instant they reply or click — nobody gets nudged about something they already answered.
3One reminder maximum, by design. No drip sequences, no spam risk. Built on Meta's official Instagram API and available on Pro ($9/mo).

What is Instagram DM follow-up automation?

DM follow-up automation is a second message that goes out automatically when your first one gets ignored — not answered, ignored. Here's the psychology that makes it work: when someone comments "LINK" on your post, that's a raised hand. Real interest. But Instagram DMs get buried fast. Your message lands, they get pulled into a Reel, a group chat lights up, and thirty minutes later your DM is four screens deep in their inbox. They didn't reject your offer. They forgot it existed. Reachlee's follow-up nudge watches every DM your automations send. If the person never replies and never taps your link, one reminder is sent after a delay you choose. If they do respond — even a second before the reminder is due — it's cancelled. Silently. That's the whole feature: recover the people who got distracted, and never bother the people who didn't.

  • Trigger: your automation sent a DM (from a comment, Reel, story reply, DM keyword, or product carousel) and the person went quiet — no reply, no link click.
  • Action: after your chosen delay (30 minutes to 20 hours), Reachlee sends one polite reminder — optionally re-attaching your link button so they don't have to scroll back to find it.
  • Safety: the follow-up re-checks at send time, not just when it was scheduled. Any reply or click, at any point, cancels it. One reminder is the hard maximum.
How it works

Three steps, and the awkward part handles itself.

01

Toggle it on in any automation

Open any automation you've already built — comment-to-DM, Reels, story replies, DM keywords, product carousel — and flip on the follow-up step. No separate workflow to build, no branching logic to think through. It attaches to the message you're already sending.

02

Drag the delay slider

Choose how long Reachlee waits before nudging: anywhere from 30 minutes to 20 hours. Short delays catch people who got distracted mid-scroll; longer delays land in their next Instagram session. The 20-hour cap keeps every reminder safely inside Instagram's 24-hour messaging window.

03

Write the reminder — it cancels itself if they respond

Compose one short, friendly nudge. Use {{username}} to personalise it, and optionally re-send your link button so it's one tap away. Then forget about it. Reachlee re-checks at send time: if they've replied or clicked since, the reminder never goes out.

What's inside

One reminder, done properly.

Every detail is designed around a single principle: recover the distracted, never annoy the decided.

01

Works on every automation type

The follow-up step attaches to any Reachlee automation: comment-to-DM on posts, Reels comment replies, story-reaction DMs, DM keyword triggers, and product carousels. One toggle per automation — no rebuilding flows, no duplicate logic to maintain.

02

Slider timing, 30 minutes to 20 hours

Pick the exact delay on a slider instead of guessing at fixed presets. Test a 1-hour nudge on a fast-moving Reel, or an 18-hour one that lands in tomorrow's coffee scroll. The 20-hour ceiling exists for a reason: it guarantees your reminder always fires inside Instagram's 24-hour messaging window.

03

Self-cancelling, checked at send time

The moment someone replies or taps your link, their pending reminder is cancelled. And Reachlee doesn't just check when the reminder is scheduled — it re-checks at the instant of sending. Nobody ever gets a "just following up!" about a link they clicked ten minutes ago.

04

Re-sends your link button

Optionally attach the same link button to the reminder. Instead of asking someone to scroll back through their inbox hunting for your original message, the thing they wanted is right there — one tap away, in the newest message at the top of the thread.

05

{{username}} personalisation

Drop {{username}} into your reminder text and Reachlee fills in their actual Instagram handle. "Hey @sara_makes — still want the guide?" reads like you typed it yourself. A personalised nudge gets opened; a generic blast gets ignored.

06

One reminder only — by design

Reachlee will never send a second, third, or fifth follow-up. This is deliberate. One well-timed reminder recovers the forgetful; a drip sequence trains people to block you and puts your account's messaging health at risk. Polite by default, and it protects your account.

Real scenarios

Where the lost conversions actually hide.

Every automation loses a slice of its audience to distraction. The follow-up gets a meaningful chunk of them back.

Lead magnet drop where half never click

Before

Your Reel pulls 400 "GUIDE" comments. The auto-DM goes out to all of them — and your analytics show barely half ever tapped the link. Every night you scroll your inbox trying to remember who went quiet, manually typing "hey, did you get it?" until you give up around message twelve.

With Reachlee

Follow-up toggled on with a 4-hour delay: "Hey {{username}}, the guide's still waiting for you 👇" — link button re-attached. The 200 people who got distracted see it at the top of their inbox. The 200 who already clicked never hear from you again. You didn't open your inbox once.

Product drop

Before

Launch day. Hundreds of commenters get your DM with the product link, but launch-day inboxes are chaos — your message is buried under brand promos and group chats within minutes. Warm buyers simply forget before they ever tap.

With Reachlee

A 2-hour follow-up catches them in the same shopping mindset, product link one tap away: "Still eyeing it, {{username}}? Here's the link again." Anyone who already bought or replied is automatically skipped. It reads like attentive service, not a sales blast.

Waitlist signup

Before

You DM the waitlist link to everyone who commented "JOIN". The excited-but-busy majority mean to sign up later — and later never comes. Your waitlist ends up a fraction of your comment count, and you have no polite way to circle back at scale.

With Reachlee

An 18-hour reminder lands in their next-day scroll: "Spots are filling, {{username}} — grab yours" with the signup button re-attached. Everyone who already joined is filtered out at send time. The gap between comments and signups visibly narrows, on autopilot.

FAQ

DM follow-up automation, answered.

Why can't I follow up after 24 hours?

Because Instagram doesn't allow it — for any tool. Meta's policy lets businesses message a person only within 24 hours of that person's last interaction (their comment, reply, or story reaction). Once that window closes, no compliant tool on the official API can send them a message, period. That's why Reachlee's delay slider caps at 20 hours: it guarantees your reminder always fires inside the window with room to spare. If another tool promises to "follow up in 3 days," it's either breaking Meta's rules with your account or quietly failing to deliver. The honest answer is that one well-timed same-day reminder is the maximum Instagram permits — so we made that one reminder count.

Will it message someone who already replied?

No — that's the core of the feature. The follow-up only exists for people who never replied and never tapped your link. The instant either of those happens, their pending reminder is cancelled. Reachlee also re-checks at the exact moment of sending, not just when the reminder was scheduled, so even a reply that arrives seconds before the send time stops it. Nobody ever gets a "just checking in!" about something they already answered. That send-time re-check is the difference between a follow-up that feels attentive and one that feels like a bot.

Can I send more than one follow-up?

No, and that's deliberate. Reachlee sends exactly one reminder per conversation — never a drip sequence. One nudge recovers the people who got distracted, which is most of your lost conversions. A second or third message stops feeling like a reminder and starts feeling like pressure: people block, report, and your account's messaging reputation with Instagram takes the hit. We built the cap into the product rather than leaving it as a setting you could misconfigure. Polite by design protects your conversion rate and your account at the same time.

What time delay should I pick?

It depends on what you're sending. For fast-moving content — a viral Reel, a flash offer — try 1 to 4 hours, so the reminder catches people in the same session or the next one while intent is still warm. For lead magnets, waitlists, and considered purchases, 12 to 18 hours works well: the nudge lands in their next day's Instagram scroll as a fresh message at the top of their inbox. There's no universally right answer, so the slider lets you test. Start around 4 hours, watch your click-through numbers, and adjust from there.

Does it work with product carousels and Reels?

Yes — the follow-up step attaches to every Reachlee automation type. Comment-to-DM on posts, Reels comment replies, story-reaction DMs, DM keyword triggers, and product carousels all support it. It's the same toggle in each automation: if the person never replies and never taps a link in your original message, the reminder fires after your chosen delay. So if someone opens your product carousel DM and drifts off before tapping anything, they get the same polite nudge as someone who ignored a lead-magnet link.

Will Instagram flag my account for sending automated follow-ups?

No. Reachlee is a Meta-verified Tech Provider built entirely on Instagram's official API — no scraping, no browser bots, no unofficial endpoints. Every follow-up is sent inside Instagram's 24-hour messaging window (the 20-hour slider cap enforces this automatically), respects Meta's rate limits, and goes only to people who already messaged-triggered a conversation with you by commenting or reacting. The one-reminder-only rule adds another layer of safety: you can't accidentally configure spammy behavior, because the product won't allow it. This is the same compliance posture Meta expects from every official partner.

Do I have to build a separate automation for follow-ups?

No. The follow-up is a step inside your existing automations, not a separate workflow. Open any automation you've already published, toggle the follow-up on, drag the delay slider, write your reminder text (with {{username}} if you want it personalised), and optionally re-attach your link button. That's the whole setup — under a minute per automation. There's no branching flow builder to learn and no duplicate automation to keep in sync. When you edit the original automation, the follow-up rides along with it.
