What is a growth gate (a.k.a. follow-to-unlock)?
A growth gate is an Instagram automation pattern where you delay sharing your link until the commenter follows your account. It works because the comment-to-DM trigger has already created intent: the user wants the link badly enough to comment. Asking them to follow is a small, friction-free price for a resource they already raised their hand for — and Instagram's follow button is one tap inside the same DM. The result: instead of just a clicker, you get a follower who will see your future posts in their feed.

Build the comment-to-DM trigger
Pick a post, a Reel, or all posts. Set the keyword ("LINK", "GUIDE", "PLAYBOOK"). Write the initial DM the same way you would any comment-to-DM automation.
Enable Growth Gate
In the automation builder, flip on "Growth Gate". Write the gate DM body — Reachlee suggests a clean default: "One quick thing — follow @yourhandle to unlock the link 🔒". Optionally set a fallback message if they never follow.

Will gating my link annoy commenters?
In practice, no. The user already showed intent by commenting — they want the link. Following is one tap inside the same DM thread. Most commenters either follow within seconds or self-select out (and they were never going to convert anyway). Net effect: more followers, no measurable drop in link clicks.
What if the commenter already follows me?
Reachlee detects existing followers automatically and skips the gate — they get the link instantly, just like a regular comment-to-DM flow. Zero friction for your existing audience.
How fast does the gate unlock after they follow?
Under 5 seconds in practice. Meta delivers the follow webhook within ~1-2 seconds; Reachlee detects it, matches it to the pending gated user, and fires the unlock DM within another 1-2 seconds. The user sees the link arrive while they're still on your profile.
What if the user follows, gets the link, then unfollows?
They keep the link they already received — Reachlee doesn't revoke. Empirically the unfollow rate is low (3-8%), but it does happen. The net audience growth is still strongly positive.
Can I customise the gate message?
