What is Manychat AI Step?
And when you don't need it
Manychat's AI Step is a block you place inside a flow and hand a script to. It is a real feature with real uses — and a lot of creators who search for it only want their repeated DMs answered. Here is what the step does, what Intention Recognition adds, and when a knowledge-first AI at $14/mo (₹799 in India) gets you there without building a flow.
Manychat AI Step, in one paragraph
Manychat AI Step is a node you add to a Manychat flow and give a written task — collect information, answer questions from a Knowledge Base, or qualify a contact. The AI runs the conversation for that task, saves what it learns to custom fields, and returns to the next step in the flow. It is flow-first: the AI works where you place it, following the script you write, and nowhere else.
What the AI Step actually does inside a flow
Described from Manychat's public help center and product page. The AI Step is not a free-roaming assistant; it is a bounded task-runner that lives at one point in a flow you have already built.
- You place it. Like a Message or Condition block, the AI Step sits at a specific point in the flow — after a comment trigger, after a keyword, after a button tap. Messages that never reach that point never meet the AI.
- You script it. The step takes plain-language instructions: what to ask, what to collect, what tone to use, when to stop. The better the brief, the tighter the conversation. A vague brief produces vague replies.
- It collects. The common use is data capture — name, email, phone, budget, a yes/no qualifier — saved into custom fields so later steps and integrations can use them.
- It answers from a Knowledge Base. Give it documents or website content and the step can respond to questions about your offer while it works through its task.
- It hands back. When the task is done (or the person goes off-script for too long), the flow resumes at the next block. The AI is a passage in the funnel, not the funnel.
How Intention Recognition routes a message
A message arrives that matches no keyword
Keyword triggers need the exact word. 'What's the damage?' does not contain 'price', so a keyword-only setup lets it fall through.
Intention Recognition reads the meaning
Instead of a word list you describe an intent — 'the person is asking about pricing' — and the AI decides whether the incoming message fits.
The message is sent down a branch
A match routes into the flow you attached to that intent. From there it behaves like any other flow: messages, buttons, an AI Step, a field save.
You maintain the branches
Every intent you want handled needs a flow behind it. Ten intents, ten flows to build and keep current when your prices or links change.
Flow-first AI vs knowledge-first AI
Both approaches are legitimate. They fit different accounts.
Where the AI lives
In Manychat, the AI lives inside flows — at the step you placed it and behind the intents you routed. In Reachlee, AI Replies sit outside your automations and answer any inbound DM your knowledge covers, with no flow to build first.
What you write
For an AI Step you write a task brief per step; for Intention Recognition you write an intent per branch. For Reachlee you write knowledge once — scan your website links, paste text, or answer an opt-in interview — and every reply draws from it.
What happens when nothing matches
In a flow, an unrouted message goes to the default reply or nowhere. Reachlee's classifier decides per message: questions, buy intent, and support issues get an answer; greetings, friend chat, and spam are skipped and cost nothing.
Guardrails
An AI Step follows the brief you give it. Reachlee's AI never invents prices or links, only sends links from your allowed list, matches the sender's language across 20+ including Hindi and Hinglish, and says the creator will get back to you when it is unsure.
Receipts
Reachlee logs every AI reply in an Activity feed with the message that triggered it and the label the classifier gave. Threads the AI touched carry a badge in the Inbox; you can mute the AI per thread or pause it globally, and it stays out of any thread for 48 hours after you reply yourself.
When you need the step, and when you don't
The same three DMs, handled two ways.
A scripted lead qualifier
You want every 'interested' DM walked through four fixed questions — budget, timeline, location, phone — in that order, saved to fields, then handed to a booking link. This is a flow, and an AI Step inside it is the right tool.
Reachlee's capture-lead goal steers a natural reply toward getting an email or phone, but it does not run a fixed questionnaire. If you need the four questions in order, build the flow.
Open questions about your offer
'Do you ship to Pune?', 'Is the September cohort full?', 'Does the preset pack work in Lightroom Mobile?' Each needs an intent, a branch, and a Knowledge Base entry before the AI Step can answer it.
Reachlee answers all three from the same knowledge you added on day one, with no branch per question. Change a price in your knowledge and every future reply reflects it.
Comments under a post
Manychat AI Comments recognizes positive comments and replies in your tone; questions in comments are routed through keyword triggers or left for you.
Reachlee's AI Comments replies to substantive comments including questions, keeps public replies under 150 characters with no links, skips emoji-only, tag-a-friend, spam, and negative comments, and turns buy intent into a 'check your DMs' breadcrumb plus a private DM with the link.
What each route costs
Manychat's AI used to be a $29/mo add-on; its 2026 pricing folds AI into a Pro plan that starts at $39/mo for 2,500 contacts (as of September 2026, verify on manychat.com). Reachlee Growth is $14/mo (₹799 in India) flat with 1,000 AI credits, one credit per AI reply sent, skips free. Business is $29/mo (₹1,499 in India) with 2,500 credits, 10 accounts, and 5 team seats.

What is the difference between Manychat AI Step and Intention Recognition?
The AI Step is a block that does work inside a flow — it converses to collect information or answer questions, then hands back. Intention Recognition is a trigger that reads what a message means and routes it to a flow branch. One acts, the other routes. Most Manychat AI setups use both: an intent catches the message, an AI Step handles it.
Is Manychat AI Step free?
No. Manychat's AI used to be a $29/mo add-on; its 2026 pricing folds AI into a Pro plan that starts at $39/mo for 2,500 contacts (as of September 2026, verify on manychat.com). Pro scales with active contacts, so the AI's effective cost rises with your audience.
Do I need a flow to use Reachlee AI?
No. Connect your Instagram account, add knowledge (scanned website links, pasted text, or an opt-in interview), and switch on AI Replies or AI Comments. The AI answers inbound DMs and substantive comments from that knowledge. Optionally, attach a goal — share a link, capture a lead, or grow followers — and watch results in the Activity feed.
Will a knowledge-first AI make things up about my prices?
Reachlee's AI answers only from the knowledge you add. It never invents prices or links; links come only from your allowed list. When a question is outside what it knows, it says the creator will get back to you rather than guessing. Every reply is logged with the message it answered, so you can audit and mute any thread.
Is an AI Step or AI reply allowed under Instagram's rules?
Yes, on the official Instagram API and inside Meta's rules: reply only to people who messaged you, within the 24-hour messaging window, never as first contact. Manychat and Reachlee both connect through Instagram's OAuth login. Reachlee's AI additionally stays out of a thread for 48 hours after a human replies.
Can the AI message people who never DMed me?
Not on the official API. Meta permits replies to inbound messages inside the 24-hour window only, so no compliant tool sends first-contact DMs. Reachlee's AI only answers inbound DMs and public comments on your posts.
What happens when a keyword automation and the AI both match a DM?
In Reachlee the keyword automation wins and the AI stands down, so one message gets one reply. This mirrors how Manychat lets exact triggers take priority over intent routing, and it means your existing comment-to-DM and keyword flows keep working exactly as before when you switch AI on.
