What is a UTM link and why use one on Instagram?
A UTM link is a normal URL with extra tags (utm_source, utm_medium, utm_campaign, and more) added to the end. Those tags don't change where the link goes — they tell your analytics tool where the visitor came from. On Instagram, where you only get one clickable bio link and swipe-up stories, UTMs are the only reliable way to know whether a sale came from your bio, a specific story, or a Reel. Tag every link you share and your analytics finally tells you which content actually converts.
- utm_source = where (instagram), utm_medium = the channel type (social), utm_campaign = the promotion.
- Use utm_content to tell two links apart — e.g. 'bio_link' vs 'story_swipe'.
- Works with Google Analytics, and most link-in-bio and store platforms.
How to build your tracked link
Paste your destination
Drop in the page you want people to land on — your store, landing page, or booking link.
Fill the campaign tags
Source and medium are pre-filled for Instagram. Add a campaign name and, optionally, a content label to tell links apart.
Copy and share
Copy the generated link and use it in your bio, story, or link-in-bio. Traffic now shows up tagged in your analytics.
Frequently asked questions
What UTM values should I use for Instagram?
A common setup is utm_source=instagram, utm_medium=social, and a utm_campaign that names your promotion (e.g. summer_launch). Add utm_content to distinguish a bio link from a story link. This tool pre-fills sensible defaults.
Do UTM tags slow down or change my link?
No. They're just extra text on the end of the URL. The link goes to the exact same page — the tags are only read by your analytics tool to attribute the visit.
Where do I see the results?
In your analytics platform (most commonly Google Analytics), traffic from tagged links appears grouped by source, medium, and campaign, so you can compare what each post or story drove.
Is it free?
Yes — free, no signup, and it runs entirely in your browser. Nothing you type is sent anywhere.
