## The short answer

To automatically DM someone who comments on your Instagram post, you need two things: an Instagram professional account (Business or Creator — free to switch) and an automation tool built on Meta's official API, like Reachlee. You connect the account, pick a post and a trigger keyword, write the DM, and go live — about five minutes end to end. One hard rule: the DM can only go to people who comment. Instagram's API never allows cold outreach to people who haven't engaged with you.

1Switch to a professional account (30 seconds in IG settings), then connect it to Reachlee via Instagram's official OAuth login — no Facebook Page needed.

2Pick the comment trigger, choose a specific post or all posts (Pro), set your keywords, and write both the public reply and the DM.

3Flip it live and test by commenting the keyword yourself — the DM arrives within about 5 seconds. Free plan covers 1 account and 1,000 DMs/month.

## Prerequisites: the one thing you must have.

Before any tool can auto-DM your commenters, your Instagram account has to be a professional account — either Business or Creator. This is a Meta requirement, not a tool limitation: Instagram's Graph API, the only official way to read comments and send DMs programmatically, simply does not expose personal accounts. Any product that claims to automate a personal account is logging into Instagram with your password and puppeting the app, which violates Instagram's terms and is how accounts get restricted. Switching takes about 30 seconds and is free: open Instagram, go to Settings → Account type and tools → Switch to professional account, pick Creator or Business, done. It's reversible any time, and your followers, posts, and DMs are untouched.

* Instagram Business or Creator account — switch in IG → Settings → Account type and tools → Switch to professional account.
* A tool built on Meta's official Instagram API. If a tool asks for your Instagram password, close the tab — that's a browser bot, not an API integration.
* One post or Reel you want to automate (or every post at once, on Pro). That's the entire shopping list.

How it works

## The step-by-step setup in Reachlee.

01

### Connect your Instagram account

Sign in to Reachlee with Google, then click "Connect Instagram". You're redirected to Instagram's official OAuth screen — the same login flow Meta uses everywhere. Log in with your professional account, approve the permissions Meta lists, and you land back in the dashboard, connected. Reachlee never sees your password; Instagram hands over a scoped access token instead. No Facebook Page, no Business Manager role. This step takes about 20 seconds.

02

### Create an automation with the comment trigger

In the builder, create a new automation and pick the comment trigger — "someone comments on a post". This is the event Reachlee listens for. Meta delivers each new comment to Reachlee via webhook within a second or two of it being posted, which is what makes the DM feel instant on the commenter's side.

03

### Choose the post scope

Decide where the trigger applies: a specific post or Reel you select from your recent media, or any post on your account. Any-post triggers are a Pro feature and are the right call once the automation is part of your content system — every future Reel automatically inherits it, so you never forget to attach it before something goes viral.

04

### Set your keywords — or match every comment

Add the keyword a commenter has to type for the DM to fire — "LINK", "GUIDE", "PRICE". Matching is case-insensitive and you can list several keywords comma-separated, so "link, links, LINK pls" all count. Prefer to respond to everyone? Set the trigger to match any comment instead. Keywords are usually better: they filter out "nice post!" noise and give you a call-to-action to put in your caption.

05

### Write the public reply and the DM

Two messages, two jobs. The public reply lands under their comment ("Sent it to your DMs ✨") — it confirms the keyword works and shows every other viewer that commenting gets a response. The DM is where the value goes: your message, a link button to your resource, and {{username}} anywhere you want their Instagram handle swapped in. Links you add are automatically wrapped with click tracking, so you'll see CTR per automation later.

06

### Turn it live

Flip the automation live. From this moment, every new comment that matches your trigger gets the public reply and the DM — typically within 5 seconds of the comment being posted. Nothing happens to comments that already existed before this point (more on that in the FAQ). You can edit the DM any time; changes apply to all future commenters.

07

### Test it yourself

Don't announce it untested. Comment your keyword on the target post — from your own account or a spare — and watch your inbox. You should see the public reply appear under your comment and the DM arrive within seconds. If both land, you're done. If not, jump to the troubleshooting FAQ below; the cause is almost always one of three things.

Best practices

## Make it actually convert.

The setup takes five minutes. These four habits are what separate a novelty from a lead machine.

01

### Put the keyword CTA in your caption

The automation only fires on comments, so tell people to comment. End the caption and the Reel itself with "Comment LINK and I'll DM it to you". Explicit keyword CTAs reliably outperform vague "check the link in bio" asks — commenting is lower friction than leaving the app.

02

### Rotate your public replies

One identical "Sent! ✨" repeated 400 times reads like a bot posted it. Reachlee rotates through a pool of public replies — "Sent it to your DMs ✨", "Check your inbox 👀" — so the comment section looks alive, which protects both conversions and account health.

03

### Add the follow-up nudge (Pro)

A chunk of commenters get the DM, get distracted, and never tap. Reachlee's follow-up sends one polite reminder later — and cancels itself automatically if they've already replied or clicked. One reminder maximum, by design.

04

### Measure with tracked links

Because every link is click-tracked, you can compare CTR across posts and see which content produces commenters who actually tap through — not just which post got the most comments. That's the number to optimize.

Compliance box

Three rules govern everything on this page, and they come from Meta, not from any tool. First: the 24-hour messaging window — a business can free-form message someone only within 24 hours of that person's last action, and can never message first. Second: one private reply per comment, ever, and it must be sent within 7 days of the comment. Third: only official-API tools are sanctioned; password-based bots violate Instagram's terms. A well-built tool enforces all three automatically — Reachlee does. See our full guides on Instagram's DM limits and on whether DM automation is allowed, linked below.

Real scenarios

## What people typically set up first.

The 3 most common comment-to-DM automations creators and brands build on day one.

### "Comment LINK for the free guide"

Before

You shoot a Reel about a lead magnet, then spend 4 hours over the next 2 days typing "DM sent!" replies one by one.

With Reachlee

Set up the automation once with the keyword "LINK". Every commenter gets the tracked link in under 5 seconds — and you see in the dashboard exactly how many tapped it.

### "Comment INFO for pricing"

Before

Customer DMs pile up asking "how much?" and "is this still available?". The founder spends 2 hours a day answering them.

With Reachlee

Keyword INFO triggers an auto-DM with pricing and the buy link. Only the genuinely qualified questions reach the founder.

### "Comment COURSE to enroll"

Before

Pinned comment with the course link gets buried after 50 new comments. People DM you asking where the link went.

With Reachlee

COURSE triggers the DM with the course link and a {{username}} greeting — and (on Business) pipes each lead into your Google Sheet.

Pricing

## Set it up free.

Comment-to-DM is on the free plan — 1 Instagram account, 1,000 DMs/month, full automation, no credit card. Pro ($9/mo) adds 3 accounts, unlimited DMs, any-post triggers, Retrigger for past comments, follow-up nudges, and Growth Gate. Business ($29/mo) adds Google Sheets piping and team seats.

FAQ

## Troubleshooting and policy, answered.

Why didn't the DM send when someone commented?

Three causes explain almost every miss. First: the account is still a personal account — the API can't see its comments or send its DMs, so nothing fires. Switch to Business or Creator and reconnect. Second: keyword mismatch — the comment didn't contain any keyword on your list. Matching is case-insensitive, but "can you send the guide?" won't match "LINK"; add the variations people actually type. Third: the commenter's own privacy settings — if they don't follow you, Instagram may route the DM to their hidden message-request folder, or their settings may decline message requests entirely. The DM was sent; they just haven't seen it. That last one is on Instagram's side and no tool can override it.

Does comment-to-DM automation work on Reels?

Yes — Reels comments trigger the automation exactly like feed-post comments: same webhook, same keyword matching, same \~5-second DM. Reels arguably benefit most, because the majority of Reel commenters found you through the algorithm and don't follow you yet — the auto-DM is often your only chance to reach them before they scroll on. We wrote a Reels-specific playbook covering viral comment spikes and caption CTAs; it's linked below.

Can I auto-DM people who commented before I set the automation up?

Yes, within a limit. A live automation only fires on new comments — but Reachlee's Retrigger feature (Pro, $9/mo) scans a post's existing comments and runs your automation on them, deduped and paced to stay within Instagram's limits. The hard boundary is Meta's: private replies must be sent within 7 days of the comment, so Retrigger reaches commenters from the past week — not from months ago. Any tool claiming it can DM month-old commenters is operating outside the official API.

Is auto-DMing commenters allowed by Instagram?

Yes — when it's done through Meta's official API, it's an explicitly supported feature called a private reply: Instagram lets a business send one DM to someone who commented on its post or Reel. What's not allowed is cold outreach (messaging people who never engaged), messaging outside the 24-hour window, or automating via password-login bots. Reachlee only ever messages commenters, enforces the window, and uses the official API — the same compliance basis as Manychat and other Meta Business Partners. Full breakdown in our "is it allowed?" guide, linked below.

Do I need a Facebook Page to set this up?

No — not with Reachlee. We use Instagram's Business Login directly, so the only thing you connect is your Instagram professional account. Many older tools still require a Facebook Page linked through Business Manager; Reachlee skips that step entirely, which is most of why setup takes minutes instead of an afternoon.

What keywords should I use?

Short, memorable words that don't occur in normal comment chatter: "LINK", "GUIDE", "INFO", "PRICE", "COURSE". Avoid generic words like "yes" or "thanks" — they'll match congratulation comments and burn your one private reply per comment on people who didn't want the DM. List common variations comma-separated, and repeat the exact keyword in your caption so people know what to type.

Can I edit the DM after going live?

Yes, any time. Edits apply to every future commenter immediately; DMs already delivered stay as they were sent, since they're already in someone's inbox. This makes it safe to iterate — tweak the copy, swap the link, or adjust keywords while the automation stays live.
