# Instagram DM automation in 2027:
the rules, the limits and a January checklist

Meta's rules for automated DMs change slowly, and this guide doesn't guess at changes nobody has announced. What did change in 2026 is what a well-run account builds inside those rules: Facebook Pages next to Instagram, AI replies that hand hard conversations to a person, campaigns to contacts, and flows with branches. Here are both, then a checklist for the first week of January.

Meta's official API only · no predictions · checked October 2026

## The short answer

Instagram DM automation in 2027 works the way it must on Meta's official API: the person starts the conversation with a comment, a DM or a story reply; a business may send one private reply per comment within 7 days; and free-form messages are allowed only within 24 hours of the person's last message. No official tool can cold-DM followers. What's new is what you build inside those rules: AI replies with human handoff, campaigns, contacts and flows.

1The rules a 2027 setup must respect are the ones that held through 2026: official API only, no first contact, one private reply per comment within 7 days, a 24-hour window after the person's last message, and Meta's per-account rate limits.

2What a good 2027 setup adds on top: Instagram and Facebook Pages in one place, AI that answers from your own knowledge and flags what it can't, DM campaigns to people who already messaged you, contacts sorted into folders and segments, and flows with branches.

3Spend the first week of January on ten checks: account connections, last year's automations, evergreen posts, Retrigger, contacts, AI knowledge, alerts, the first-quarter calendar, one flow, and what an AI assistant may do through the connector.

## What stays true in 2027

If a tool's pitch for 2027 depends on Meta loosening its rules, be careful. The official Instagram API, and the Messenger Platform behind Facebook Pages, have worked the same way for years, and the rules below are the ones every compliant tool lives inside. They aren't limits a vendor chose. They're the reason automation on the official API doesn't get accounts restricted the way password-sharing bots do, and they shape every other section of this guide. Two of them surprise people most often: following you doesn't make someone reachable, and a private reply is one message per comment, ever. The [rules reference](/guides/instagram-automation-rules/) has the sources for each.

* Official API only. The account connects through Meta's own login, never with your password, and you can revoke access from Meta's settings at any time.
* No first contact. A business can't start a conversation with someone who never commented, replied to a story or messaged it, and that includes your followers.
* One private reply per comment, sent within 7 days of the comment. Anything after that needs the person to reply or tap first.
* The 24-hour window. Free-form messages only within 24 hours of the person's last message; every new message from them reopens it ([how the window works](/guides/instagram-24-hour-messaging-window/)).
* Rate limits. Meta limits messaging per account per hour, and a compliant tool paces its sends and backs off when Meta asks ([every published limit](/guides/instagram-dm-limits/)).
* Links to non-followers go as text first on Instagram, because Instagram can refuse buttons and media to people who don't follow the account.

What changed in 2026

## What a 2027 setup should use that a 2025 setup didn't have

These are capabilities Reachlee shipped during 2026\. Each works inside the rules above, not around them.

01

### Facebook Pages next to Instagram

Comment-to-Messenger, keyword replies, ice breakers, lead capture, product carousels, follow-ups and Retrigger run on Facebook Pages in the same workspace as your Instagram accounts, from Pro. If your customers comment on both, one set of habits covers both inboxes ([what runs where](/facebook-messenger/)).

02

### AI replies from your own knowledge

Reachlee AI answers DMs and comments from what you teach it: your website, pasted text, a short interview. It replies inside the 24-hour window, doesn't invent prices or links, and skips spam and emoji-only messages. You can chat with it in the Playground before it answers anyone real.

03

### A handoff when the AI shouldn't answer

When the answer isn't in your knowledge, someone complains, or someone asks for a person, the conversation is marked Needs you and you get an email or Telegram alert, instantly or in a digest. An AI reply never closes a complaint or a request for a person ([how the handoff works](/ai/human-handoff/)).

04

### Campaigns to people who already messaged you

A campaign sends a DM sequence to all your contacts, a folder or a segment. It reaches Active contacts right away and, with Keep it open, everyone else in the audience the moment they next message you, for up to 30 days. It never reaches people who never messaged you ([how campaigns work](/use-cases/instagram-dm-campaigns/)).

05

### Contacts you can sort and see

Everyone who DMs or comments becomes a contact with a status (Active, Pending, Inactive or Opted out), so you can see at a glance who is reachable today. Folders are lists you fill by hand or from a flow; segments are saved filters such as 'clicked a link in the last 30 days'.

06

### Flows on a canvas, and an AI connector

Automations can be built as flows with questions, branches, waits, folders and contact-event triggers. Through Reachlee's MCP connector, Claude, ChatGPT or another MCP client can read your analytics and manage automations with only the permissions you grant ([the connector](/ai/mcp-server/)).

How it works

## A 10-step checklist for the first week of January

01

### Check every connected account

Make sure each Instagram account and Facebook Page in your workspace shows as connected. If one says it needs reconnecting, its automations aren't sending until you reconnect it, so do this before anything else.

02

### Retire last year's offers

Go through your live automations. Pause the ones pointing at a 2026 sale or an expired code, update links and prices in the rest, and check that each keyword still matches what your captions ask people to comment.

03

### Cover evergreen posts properly

For posts that keep collecting comments, put one automation on several specific posts (up to 10), or use Any post or Next post if every post should answer the same way. Both are on Pro.

04

### Catch up on the holidays

Run Retrigger on any post that collected comments while its automation was paused or missing. It covers comments from the last 7 days, skips anyone already messaged and paces the sends.

05

### Tidy your contacts

Create folders for the year's lists, such as a waitlist or a VIP list, and save the segments you'll reuse, like 'has an email' or 'clicked in the last 30 days'. Opted-out contacts stay opted out.

06

### Update what your AI knows

Replace last year's prices, shipping dates and policies in your knowledge sources. Then ask the questions customers actually ask in the Playground and teach it where it falls short. Nothing in the Playground is sent to anyone.

07

### Decide how you want to be alerted

In Settings → Notifications, choose which Needs-you reasons alert you instantly and which arrive in a digest, set your quiet hours, and connect Telegram if that's where you read messages.

08

### Put the first-quarter dates on the calendar

Lunar New Year, Valentine's Day, Ramadan and Eid al-Fitr, Mothering Sunday, Holi and Easter all fall before April 2027\. Open each one's waitlist two to three weeks ahead; the 2027 calendar guide has every date.

09

### Rebuild your main funnel as a flow

Take the automation that matters most, whether it's a freebie, a quiz or a booking question, and rebuild it on the canvas with a question, a folder step and a branch for people who don't reply. Building is free; follow-ups and waits need Pro when you set it live.

10

### Choose what your AI assistant may do

If you use Claude or ChatGPT, connect them through the MCP connector and grant only what you want: read for weekly reports, manage for automation changes, send for replies inside open conversations. You can revoke a connection at any time.

Buyer's checklist

## Six checks for choosing an automation tool for 2027

01

### It connects through Meta's login

You should authorise the tool on Meta's own screen and never type your Instagram password into it. Meta tech provider or partner status is a useful signal, and you should be able to revoke access from Meta's settings.

02

### It says no to cold DMs

A tool that promises to message every follower, or a list of usernames, is not using the official API. The honest ones explain the 24-hour window and the one-reply-per-comment rule on their own pages.

03

### It paces and backs off

Sends should be spread out, not fired in a burst, and the tool should read Meta's rate-limit signals and pause when asked. Ask what happens to a 2,000-comment backlog before you find out on a launch day.

04

### Its price doesn't punish a good month

Check whether the price climbs with your contact count or DM volume. A post that takes off can push you into a higher tier mid-month on a metered plan; flat pricing doesn't move.

05

### It covers the channels your customers use

If your customers comment on both Instagram and your Facebook Page, check what each feature does on each channel, because Meta doesn't offer the same events on both.

06

### It tells you when a person should take over

AI replies are only as good as their handoff. Look for a clear signal when the AI couldn't or shouldn't answer, an alert you'll actually see, and a log of every reply it sent.

Real scenarios

## Three January starts

### A creator with a year of old automations

Before

Dozens of automations from 2026 are still live, some pointing at expired codes, some on posts nobody comments on any more, and nobody remembers which keyword belongs to which offer.

With Reachlee

The January audit pauses the expired ones, moves evergreen keywords onto several posts at once, and a Retrigger run catches the comments that arrived while the account was quiet over the holidays.

### A shop going into the January sales

Before

Sale questions about sizes and delivery arrive in bursts, the same questions as last year, and the team answers them one by one while comments under the sale post wait.

With Reachlee

Reachlee AI answers the repeat questions from refreshed knowledge, comment-to-DM sends the sale link under the post, and anything about a specific order arrives as a Needs-you alert for a person.

### An agency onboarding new clients

Before

Every new client starts with the same calls: which tool, what's allowed, and why their followers can't simply be messaged.

With Reachlee

The rules table above answers the why, the checklist becomes the onboarding plan, and each client's accounts sit in one workspace, with team seats on Business.

FAQ

## Instagram DM automation in 2027, answered

Is Instagram DM automation allowed in 2027?

Yes, when it runs on Meta's official API and inside its rules: no first contact, one private reply per comment within 7 days, and free-form messages only within 24 hours of the person's last message. Meta built these APIs so businesses can automate conversations, and tools that use them go through Meta's app review. What isn't allowed is software that logs in with your password to message people at scale, and that is what gets accounts restricted.

[Instagram automation rules](/guides/instagram-automation-rules/)

Will Instagram allow cold DMs or broadcasts to all followers in 2027?

We plan only around what Meta has published, and nothing published lets a business message someone who hasn't messaged it first. Every official tool, Reachlee included, works inside that rule. If Meta announces a change, our rules reference will be updated; until then, treat any promise of messaging every follower as a sign the tool isn't using the official API. What you can do is reach everyone who comments, once, and everyone who messages you, for 24 hours at a time.

[Instagram broadcast messages](/guides/instagram-broadcast-messages/)

What are the Instagram DM limits in 2027?

The binding limits are rules rather than numbers you can pay past: the 24-hour window, one private reply per comment within 7 days, and Meta's hourly messaging limits per account, which a compliant tool paces under and backs off from when Meta signals. Reachlee's own plan limits are separate: 1,000 DMs a month on Free, unlimited on paid plans. Our DM limits guide lists every published number with its source.

[Instagram DM limits](/guides/instagram-dm-limits/)

Do I need a Facebook Page to automate Instagram DMs?

No. Reachlee connects Instagram professional accounts directly through Instagram's own business login, so no Facebook Page is needed for Instagram automation. A Facebook Page is only needed if you want to automate that Page's comments and Messenger, which Reachlee supports from Pro as its own connected account.

Is AI auto-reply on Instagram allowed?

Yes. Meta's messaging policies don't distinguish template replies from AI-written ones; they ask that automated experiences say they're automated when asked and hand off to a person. Replies must still go out inside the 24-hour window. The real risks are quality ones, such as wrong prices or invented links, which is why Reachlee AI answers only from your knowledge and marks complaints and requests for a person as Needs you.

[Is AI auto reply allowed?](/guides/is-ai-auto-reply-allowed-on-instagram/)

Can I run the same automations on Instagram and Facebook Pages?

Mostly, yes. Comment-to-DM, keyword replies, ice breakers, lead capture, product carousels, follow-ups, Retrigger, campaigns and Reachlee AI all run on both. Two things are Instagram only: story-reply triggers, because Meta sends no story events for Pages, and checking that someone follows you before sending a link. Pages connect from Pro and count toward the same connected-account limit as Instagram accounts.

Will automating DMs get my account restricted in 2027?

Automation on the official API doesn't, as long as messages stay relevant to what people asked for. Restrictions come from unofficial tools that log in as you and from spam-like behaviour such as repeated, unwanted messages. Reachlee paces every send, follows Meta's rate-limit signals, and pauses an account's sends automatically if Meta blocks or limits it, telling you when sending resumes.

[Instagram restricted my account](/guides/instagram-restricted-my-account-for-automation/)

What should I do first in January?

Start with the two checks that stop silent failures: every connected account healthy, and no live automation pointing at a dead link or last year's code. Then run Retrigger on any post that collected comments over the holidays, refresh your AI knowledge, and put the first-quarter dates on your calendar. The full ten-step list is above, and the 2027 marketing calendar has every date worth a campaign.
