# Facebook Messenger ice breakers:
setup, limits and examples

Ice breakers are the tappable questions Messenger shows when someone opens a brand-new conversation with your Facebook Page — "What are your prices?", "Are you open today?". Meta Business Suite calls them Frequently asked questions. Here is exactly how many you get, how long they can be, why they sometimes don't appear, six ready-made sets by business type, and how to make every tap answer itself.

## The short answer

Facebook Messenger ice breakers are up to 4 tappable questions, each up to 80 characters, that a Facebook Page shows to a person opening a new, empty Messenger conversation with it. In Meta Business Suite the same feature is labelled Frequently asked questions. A tap arrives at the Page as a postback, so the answer can be sent automatically, and it opens the standard 24-hour messaging window. Ice breakers never appear in a thread that already has messages, which is the number-one reason people think theirs are not working.

1Ice breakers are Meta's own Messenger feature: question chips shown only when someone opens a NEW conversation with your Page, before they type anything

2Limits: up to 4 questions per locale, each question up to 80 characters

3Meta Business Suite shows the same feature under Inbox → Automations as 'Frequently asked questions'

4They never show in an existing thread — if you have ever exchanged a message with the Page, you will not see them. Test by deleting the thread or from a fresh profile

5A tap arrives as a postback, so the Page can answer instantly and automatically; the tap also opens the 24-hour messaging window

6Reachlee lets you set up to 4 per Page (2 on the Free plan, 4 on Pro), auto-answers each one, can capture an email or phone in the same thread, and hands anything unusual to a human in the inbox

## What Messenger ice breakers are

Ice breakers are a native feature of the Messenger Platform for Facebook Pages. When a person opens a conversation with your Page for the very first time, Messenger shows a short list of tappable questions in the empty thread — the questions you wrote, in your words. The person taps one instead of composing a message. That removes the awkward 'hi, quick question…' step that stops a lot of people from ever messaging, and steers every new conversation toward the questions you are ready to answer. Meta provides the chips; what it does not provide, unless you wire it up, is the answer — without an automation a tapped ice breaker lands in your Page inbox as one more unread message. Because a tap reaches the Page as a postback, a tool built on the official API can reply the instant it happens, which is the whole point of pairing them with [Facebook Messenger automation](/facebook-messenger-automation/). The mechanic is identical to [Instagram ice breakers](/use-cases/instagram-ice-breakers/); the limits and the Business Suite label are what differ.

* Shown in a new, empty conversation with the Page — never in a thread with history
* Up to 4 questions per locale, each up to 80 characters
* A tap is a postback, not typed text, so there is nothing for a keyword to mismatch
* The tap opens the standard 24-hour messaging window, so the Page can hold a real conversation afterwards — see the [Messenger 24-hour rule](/guides/facebook-messenger-24-hour-rule/)
* Same feature Meta Business Suite calls 'Frequently asked questions'

Meta does not publish a character limit for the answer text in Business Suite, so this page does not quote one — treat it as a short text reply.

## When they show, and when they don't

The single most common support question about ice breakers, on Messenger and on Instagram alike, is 'I set them up and they're not showing.' Almost every time the cause is the same: the person checking is looking at a thread that already exists. Ice breakers appear only in a new, empty conversation with the Page. If you have ever exchanged a message with your own Page — and as the admin you almost certainly have — you will never see them from your own profile, and neither will a customer who messaged you last year. That is Meta's behaviour, not a setting. To test properly, delete your existing thread with the Page in Messenger and open a fresh one, or use a profile that has never messaged the Page. If they still don't appear from a genuinely fresh thread, walk through the [comment-to-message troubleshooting guide](/guides/facebook-comment-to-message-not-working/), since the same connection and permission checks apply.

* Existing threads never show ice breakers — the #1 'it's not showing' cause
* Your own admin profile has almost always messaged the Page, so you will not see them there
* Test by deleting the thread and reopening it, or from a profile that has never messaged the Page
* Because the audience is new conversations only, ice breakers are a front door — pair them with a [Messenger keyword auto-reply](/facebook-messenger-automation/) for everything typed afterwards

How it works

## How a tap turns into an answer

01

### The person opens a new conversation

They tap Message on your Page, open an m.me link, scan a QR code, or click a click-to-Messenger ad. Because the thread is empty, Messenger shows your ice breakers as tappable chips.

02

### They tap a question

Messenger posts the question into the thread as if they had typed it, and sends your Page a postback carrying the payload you attached to that question. The tap counts as the person starting the conversation, so the 24-hour messaging window opens.

03

### The Page answers automatically

A tool listening for that postback replies immediately with the answer you wrote — text, a link button, a product carousel, or a question of its own. In Reachlee each ice breaker has its own answer.

04

### The conversation continues like any other

From here the thread is a normal Messenger conversation inside the 24-hour window. Keyword replies, lead capture, follow-up reminders and a human in the inbox all work exactly as they do for any other message.

## Localization: one set per locale

Meta defines ice breakers per locale, and the 4-question cap applies to each locale rather than to the Page as a whole. A Page whose customers write in both English and Hindi can offer four English questions to one group and four Hindi questions to the other, instead of squeezing two languages into four chips. Keep each question under 80 characters in every language you offer — translations often run longer than the English original, so write the tightest version first and translate from that. If you only serve one language, set the default locale and move on; localization is an option, not a requirement.

What's inside

## Six ready-made ice breaker sets by business type

Four questions each, all under 80 characters. Start with the ones already filling your Page inbox, then swap the least-tapped question after a month.

01

### Restaurant or café

"Can I see the menu?" · "Do you take reservations?" · "What are your opening hours today?" · "Do you deliver or offer takeaway?" The menu answer should carry a link button straight to the menu page; the reservation answer can ask for a date and party size, or hand off to a booking link.

02

### Clinic or dental practice

"How do I book an appointment?" · "What are your consultation fees?" · "Which insurance do you accept?" · "Where are you located and when are you open?" The booking answer is the natural place to capture a phone number so the front desk can call back, and the fees answer should link to a price list rather than paste a paragraph.

03

### Real-estate agent

"What properties do you have available?" · "I want to sell my home — how does it work?" · "Can I book a viewing?" · "What areas do you cover?" Pair the availability answer with a product carousel of current listings, and ask for an email on the seller question so the valuation guide has somewhere to go.

04

### Salon or spa

"What are your prices?" · "How do I book?" · "Which stylists are available this week?" · "Do you do bridal or event packages?" The price and booking answers do most of the work here — a price-list link button and a booking-link button turn two taps into a confirmed appointment.

05

### Ecommerce store

"Do you ship to my country?" · "How long does delivery take?" · "What is your return policy?" · "Do you have a discount for first orders?" Shipping and returns answers should link to the policy pages; the discount answer is where you ask for an email in exchange for the code, which is the cleanest lead-capture moment a store has.

06

### Coaching institute or course provider

"Which courses do you offer?" · "What are the fees and batch timings?" · "How do I enrol?" · "Do you offer a free demo class?" The courses answer suits a carousel with one card per course; the demo-class answer should capture a phone number so a counsellor can follow up while the [24-hour window](/guides/facebook-messenger-24-hour-rule/) is still open.

| Answer | One short text reply per question | Text, link buttons, product carousel, or a question back |
| Capture email or phone | No | Yes — validated, saved to Contacts, one retry, thank-you message |
| Follow-up if they go quiet | No | One reminder, at least 30 minutes later, inside the 24h window |
| Hand to a human | Reply manually in the Business Suite inbox | Reachlee inbox; team seats on Business |
| Analytics | None per question | Taps, clicks and contacts per ice breaker |
| Google Sheets | No | Yes, on Business |

Business Suite is the right place to start if you want a fixed text answer and nothing else. The moment an answer needs a button, a lead capture step or a follow-up, you have outgrown it — the same line drawn in the \[Business Suite comment-to-message guide\](/guides/meta-business-suite-comment-to-message-limits/).

How it works

## Setting up ice breakers in Reachlee

01

### Connect the Page

Log in with Facebook and pick the Pages you administer. Pages count toward the plan's connected-account limit exactly like Instagram accounts — Free 1, Pro 3, Business 10 — and can sit in the same workspace as them.

02

### Write up to 4 questions

Take the four questions your Page inbox already receives most, keep each under 80 characters, and use one of the sets above if you are stuck. The Free plan includes 2 ice breakers; Pro ($9/mo) unlocks all 4\. Reachlee publishes them to Meta as your Page's ice breakers.

03

### Write each answer

Every question gets its own automatic reply: plain text, a tracked link button, a product carousel of up to 10 cards, or a lead-capture step that asks for an email or phone, validates it, retries once and saves it to Contacts. Add a follow-up reminder where a nudge makes sense; it fires at least 30 minutes later, inside the window, and is cancelled if they reply or click.

04

### Let the inbox catch the rest

Anything the automatic answer cannot handle is a normal Messenger conversation in the Reachlee inbox, where you or a teammate replies by hand. On Growth and Business, Reachlee AI answers typed follow-ups from your Page's own knowledge, always inside the 24-hour window.

05

### Test from a fresh thread

Delete your own conversation with the Page in Messenger and reopen it, or ask someone who has never messaged the Page. Tap each question, confirm the answer arrives, and check the analytics count the tap.

The bottom line

Ice breakers are the lowest-effort Messenger automation a Facebook Page can run: no keyword to predict, no post to pick, no flow to map — you are pre-answering the questions people already ask. Their one real constraint is structural: they only reach people opening a brand-new conversation, so they are a front door rather than the whole house. Set four tight questions under 80 characters, give each one an automatic answer with a button or a lead-capture step, and let a [comment-to-Messenger automation](/how-to/facebook-comment-to-messenger/) and keyword replies handle everyone else, all inside the [rules that bind a Page automation](/guides/facebook-automation-rules/).

FAQ

## Facebook Messenger ice breakers — FAQ

How many ice breakers can a Facebook Page have?

Up to 4 per locale, according to Meta's Ice Breakers reference. Each question can be up to 80 characters long. Because the cap is per locale, a Page serving two languages can offer four questions in each. Reachlee lets you set up to 4 per Page, each with its own automatic answer; the Free plan includes 2 and Pro unlocks 4.

Why are my Messenger ice breakers not showing?

Almost always because you are looking at a thread that already has messages in it. Ice breakers only appear in a new, empty conversation with the Page, and as the Page admin you have nearly always messaged your own Page at some point. Delete the thread in Messenger and open a fresh one, or test from a profile that has never messaged the Page. If they still don't appear, check the Page connection using the [troubleshooting guide](/guides/facebook-comment-to-message-not-working/).

Are ice breakers the same as 'Frequently asked questions' in Meta Business Suite?

Yes. Meta Business Suite exposes the same Messenger Platform feature under Inbox → Automations as Frequently asked questions, where you can set the questions and a short text reply for each. The API, and tools built on it like Reachlee, call the same thing ice breakers. Either way the questions appear in a new conversation with the Page and are subject to the same 4-per-locale, 80-character limits.

Does tapping an ice breaker open the 24-hour messaging window?

Yes. The tap counts as the person starting the conversation, and it reaches the Page as a postback. From that moment the Page has the standard 24 hours of free-form messaging described in the [Messenger 24-hour rule](/guides/facebook-messenger-24-hour-rule/) — enough to answer, send a link or carousel, ask for an email or phone, and schedule one follow-up reminder inside the window.

Can the automatic answer include a link or a product carousel?

In Reachlee, yes. Each ice breaker answer can carry a tracked link button, a product carousel of up to 10 cards with up to 3 buttons each, or a lead-capture step. Meta Business Suite's Frequently asked questions answer is a short text reply. If your answer is 'here is the menu', the button or carousel is the difference between a curious tap and a visit to your site.

Can I capture an email or phone number from an ice breaker?

Yes. Point the answer at a lead-capture step: Reachlee asks for the email or phone inside the Messenger thread, validates the format, prompts once more if it is malformed, saves the contact, and sends a thank-you message. On Business the contact also syncs to Google Sheets. The 'free demo class' and 'first-order discount' questions in the example sets are the natural places for it.

Can I set different ice breakers for different languages?

Yes. Meta defines ice breakers per locale, and the cap of 4 applies to each locale. Write the tightest English version first — 80 characters is the limit in every language, and translations usually run longer — then translate. If you serve one language, set the default locale and stop there.

Will automated ice breaker answers get my Page restricted?

No. Ice breakers are Meta's own feature, set and answered through the official Messenger Platform, and replying to someone who deliberately tapped a question you published is about the most consented-to message on the platform. Reachlee is a [Meta-verified tech provider](/meta-verified/) and every send passes a pre-flight gate. What does get Pages restricted is browser bots and message tags used for promotions, covered in the [Facebook automation rules](/guides/facebook-automation-rules/).

How are ice breakers different from a keyword auto-reply?

A keyword reply fires when someone types a word you predicted, so you have to guess phrasing and misses happen. An ice breaker presents your exact question as a chip, so there is nothing to type and nothing to mismatch — but it only shows in a new conversation. Ice breakers are the front door; keyword replies are the hallway. Most Pages run both, and on Instagram the equivalent pairing is [Instagram ice breakers](/use-cases/instagram-ice-breakers/) with DM keyword triggers.
